How to convert WebP to PNG

  1. Drop a .webp file into the box above, choose one, or paste an image.
  2. PNG is already selected. It's lossless, so there's no quality to set.
  3. Select Download to save the PNG, transparency and all.

How it works

The browser decodes the WebP, whether it was saved lossy or lossless, and the pixels go into a PNG unchanged. OxiPNG then compresses the file at level 2, a lossless step, and with alpha optimisation, which may change the hidden colour values of fully transparent pixels: nothing you can see changes. If the WebP was lossy, its compression marks are copied faithfully into the PNG, which won't remove them. Only the first frame of an animated WebP is converted.

Common uses

  • Sticker or cut-out for slides. Stickers, emoji-style graphics and product cut-outs on websites are often WebP with a transparent background. As PNG, they drop into slide decks, documents and design tools with the background still see-through.
  • A design tool won't accept WebP. Some design, print and presentation apps only import PNG or JPG. Convert to PNG so icons, logos and diagrams keep sharp edges.
  • Editing a graphic many times. Each save of a lossy image loses a little more detail. Convert the WebP to PNG once, then edit and re-save it as often as you need.

Questions

WebP to PNG or WebP to JPG?

Choose PNG for logos, graphics, screenshots and anything with a transparent background, or when you'll keep editing the image. Choose JPG for photos where a smaller file matters more.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes. PNG stores transparency fully, so transparent and semi-transparent areas stay exactly as they were in the WebP.

Why is the PNG larger than the WebP?

PNG is lossless and stores every pixel exactly, while WebP usually uses lossy compression. The PNG won't look any better than the WebP, but it won't lose anything more when you edit and re-save it.
