Why photos end up sideways

A phone's camera sensor always captures the scene in the same way; when you hold the phone upright, it saves a small orientation note in the file instead of turning the pixels. Photo apps read that note, but some websites, email clients and older programs don't, so the picture appears on its side. Rotating it here turns the pixels themselves, so it looks right everywhere.

Common uses

  • Photo uploads sideways. A phone photo looks fine on the phone but appears on its side after uploading to a form or marketplace. Turn it with Left or Right, download it, and upload the new file.
  • Backwards text in a selfie. Front cameras can save selfies mirrored, so writing on a shirt or sign reads backwards. Select Mirror to swap left and right and make the text readable.
  • Photo of a page taken upside down. A document photographed from the wrong side of the desk comes out upside down. Press Right twice to turn it 180° before sending it on.
  • Subject facing the wrong way in a layout. In a banner or page layout, a person or product usually looks better facing into the design. Select Mirror to turn them the other way.

Questions

Why does my photo show sideways on some sites but not on my phone?

Phones often save a photo in the sensor's orientation and add a note saying which way is up. Some websites and apps ignore that note. Rotating here bakes the correct orientation into the pixels, so it shows the same way everywhere.

What's the difference between mirroring and flipping?

Mirror swaps left and right, like a reflection; it's handy for selfies where text reads backwards. Flip turns the image upside down across its horizontal middle.

Does rotating reduce quality?

Turning by 90° steps moves pixels without blurring them. The result is saved again, so for JPG and WebP it's re-compressed at quality 92 by default, which is visually identical. Choose PNG if you need a lossless copy.

Can I rotate by a custom angle, like 15°?

Not yet. This tool turns in 90° steps, which covers straightening sideways and upside-down photos.
