Which format should I convert to?

FormatBest forTransparency
WebPWebsites and online stores. Usually 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same quality.Yes
JPEGPhotos that must open anywhere, including email and older marketplaces. No (filled with white)
PNGScreenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or text.Yes

Common conversions

  • PNG to WebP shrinks screenshots and graphics for the web while keeping transparency.
  • WebP to JPG makes images saved from websites open in older apps, email clients and marketplaces that don't accept WebP.
  • AVIF to JPG does the same for AVIF, a newer format some apps can't open yet.
  • JPG to PNG gives you a lossless copy to edit further, though it won't restore detail JPEG already removed.

Common uses

  • An app won't open your image. Older editors, office software and some phones can't open WebP or AVIF files. Convert the image to JPEG or PNG and it opens anywhere.
  • An upload form wants one format. A marketplace, website builder or application form may accept only JPG or only PNG. Pick that format under Convert to and upload the copy instead.
  • Making website images lighter. JPG and PNG images are often noticeably smaller as WebP. Convert to WebP at quality 85 and check the size change in the result before uploading it to your site.
  • Keeping a logo's transparent background. Saving a transparent PNG or WebP as JPEG fills the background with white. Choose PNG or WebP as the output when the see-through areas need to stay.

Questions

Does converting an image reduce its quality?

Converting to PNG is lossless. Converting to JPEG or WebP re-compresses the image; at the default quality of 85 the difference is very hard to see, and you can raise it to 100 for the closest match.

What happens to transparency?

PNG and WebP keep transparent areas. JPEG can't store transparency, so transparent areas become white.

Can I convert an animated GIF?

Only the first frame is converted, into a still image. Animated output isn't supported yet.

Can I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?

Not yet. As a workaround, share the photo from your iPhone as JPEG, or set Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible so new photos are saved as JPEG.
