How to convert HEIC to JPG
- Drop a
.heicor.heifphoto into the box above, or choose one from your files. - JPG is selected already. Pick PNG or WebP instead if you prefer.
- Adjust the quality if you like: 85 suits sharing, 95 suits printing.
- Select Download. The file keeps its name, with a
.jpgextension.
Getting HEIC photos off an iPhone
- AirDrop to a Mac keeps them as HEIC; macOS opens them, but other people you send them to may not be able to.
- Plugging into Windows copies HEIC files unless you set Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic, which converts to JPG as they're copied.
- Emailing a photo from the Photos app often sends a JPG automatically, but files shared from Files, cloud drives or messaging apps usually stay HEIC.
HEIC, JPG, PNG or WebP?
| Format | Opens on | Typical size |
|---|---|---|
| HEIC | Apple devices; recent Windows with an extra codec | Smallest |
| JPG | Everything: every phone, computer, website and printer | About twice HEIC |
| WebP | All modern browsers and most websites | Between HEIC and JPG |
| PNG | Everything; lossless, for editing | Largest by far |
How it works
Safari opens HEIC photos with the decoder built into Apple's systems, so the tool uses that when it's there. Other browsers can't read HEIC at all, so as soon as you reach for the drop box the page starts downloading libheif, an open-source HEIF decoder compiled to WebAssembly, and runs it in a background worker. A HEIC file can hold several images, such as the photo plus a depth map or thumbnails; the tool decodes only the one marked as primary, turned upright the way your iPhone shows it.
Common uses
- iPhone photo won't open on Windows. A HEIC photo copied from an iPhone often won't open on a Windows PC without an extra codec. Convert it to JPG and it opens in the built-in photo viewer.
- An upload form rejects HEIC. Government portals, job sites and online shops usually accept only JPG or PNG. Convert the photo to JPG and upload that copy instead.
- Printing iPhone photos. Print shops and photo kiosks often expect JPG files. Convert at quality 95 so the print keeps as much detail as possible.
- Putting photos into documents or slides. Some office and design apps can't insert HEIC images. Convert to JPG, or to PNG if you'll keep editing, and insert the copy.
