Temperature formulas

  • Celsius to Fahrenheit: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32
  • Fahrenheit to Celsius: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
  • Celsius to Kelvin: K = °C + 273.15

−40 is the one temperature that reads the same in Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Common uses

  • Following a recipe from abroad. Convert cups, tablespoons and fluid ounces in a US recipe to millilitres, ounces to grams, and oven temperatures from Fahrenheit to Celsius.
  • Driving in another country. Convert speed limits between mph and km/h, and road distances between miles and kilometres, before you set off.
  • Comparing storage and data plans. Convert between MB, GB and GiB to compare file sizes, cloud storage plans and mobile data allowances like for like.
  • Height and weight on a form. A form may ask for height in feet and inches or weight in stone or kilograms. Convert your measurements to the units it asks for.

Questions

How accurate are the conversions?

Exact where the definitions are exact. An inch is exactly 2.54 cm and a pound exactly 0.45359237 kg by international agreement, and those official factors are what the converter uses. Results are shown to 12 significant digits.

Why are there two kinds of gigabyte?

A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000,000,000 bytes; a gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 (2³⁰). Drive makers use GB, while many operating systems count in GiB, which is why a “1 TB” drive shows about 931 GiB.

Are the gallons US or UK?

Both are listed separately. A US gallon is 3.785 litres; a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres. Cups, pints and fluid ounces here are US measures.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply by 9/5 and add 32. So 20 °C is 20 × 1.8 + 32 = 68 °F. To go back, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9.
