How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Drop a .jpg or .jpeg file into the box above, choose one, or paste an image.
  2. PNG is already selected. There's no quality setting: PNG keeps every pixel.
  3. Select Download to save the PNG.

What it won't do

Converting can't undo JPG compression: blockiness, color banding or soft detail stay exactly as they are, just in a bigger file. If you only need a smaller or more compatible photo, keep the JPG, or compress it instead.

How it works

The JPG is decoded once and its pixels are written into a PNG exactly as they are, so nothing further is lost from here on. The PNG is then run through OxiPNG at level 2, which tries different filters and compression settings to make the file smaller without changing a single pixel. Because PNG keeps everything JPG had already blurred or blocked, the file is usually several times bigger than the JPG it came from. EXIF data, including location, isn't copied across.

Common uses

  • An upload form only accepts PNG. Some design tools, app stores and print services ask for PNG files. Convert the JPG and upload the PNG copy instead.
  • Editing a photo many times. Each time a JPG is saved it loses a little more quality. Convert to PNG before a long edit, and re-saving no longer makes it worse.
  • Cutting out the background. JPG can't store transparency. Start from a PNG so the cut-out stays transparent when you save it from your editor.

Questions

Will converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. It can't bring back detail that JPG compression already removed. What PNG does is stop any further loss: you can edit and re-save it as often as you like without it getting worse.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel exactly, while JPG throws away detail the eye barely notices. A photo as PNG is often three to ten times larger than the JPG it came from.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. A JPG has no transparency to carry over, so the PNG has the same solid background. You can then remove the background in an editor, and PNG will keep that transparency.
