How to resize a product photo

  1. Photograph the product on a white or very light background, filling most of the frame.
  2. Drop the photo into the box above and pick your marketplace.
  3. Drag the box tight around the product. Everything outside it is replaced with white.
  4. Set the margin; the result shows how much of the frame the product fills.
  5. Select Download to save a square JPG.

What this tool does and doesn't do

It places the part of the photo inside your box on a white canvas of the size you choose, centred, with an even margin, and saves it as a JPG. It does not cut the product out of its background: a product shot on a grey table keeps that grey inside the box. For the cleanest result, shoot on white paper or a light box and draw the box tight.

Common uses

  • Amazon main image. Amazon recommends a pure white background with the product filling most of the frame. Draw the box tight around a product shot on white, and get a square with an even margin.
  • Consistent catalogue grid. Photos taken on different days come out at different shapes and sizes. Running each through the same size and margin gives a shop grid where every product lines up.
  • Zoom-ready listing photos. Amazon enables zoom on images over 1,000 pixels on each side, and other marketplaces recommend similar sizes. Output at their size so shoppers can look closely at texture and detail.

Questions

Does this remove the background from my product photo?

No. It places your photo, as it is, on a white square with a margin. The area outside the box you draw becomes white, so draw the box tight around the product. If the photo itself has a coloured background, that part stays.

Why do marketplaces want square images?

Search results and category grids show products in square tiles. A square image fills the tile at the same size as everyone else's; a tall or wide one is shown smaller, with empty bands.

How big should the product be in the frame?

Amazon's seller guide suggests the product fill 85% or more of the frame. A margin of 5% on each side gives 90% for a product that reaches the edges of the box you draw. The result tells you how much of the frame it fills.
