How to make a passport photo

  1. Take a photo against a plain, light wall, facing the camera, with even light on your face.
  2. Drop it into the box above and pick your country and document.
  3. Drag the box so your head and shoulders sit in the frame as your country's rules describe.
  4. Choose Digital photo for an online application, or 4×6 in print sheet to print several copies on one standard photo print.
  5. Select Download.

What this tool does and doesn't do

It crops your photo to the right shape and saves it at the right size: as a single image, or as copies on a 6×4 inch (10×15 cm) print at 300 DPI with light grey guides to cut along. Where a government sets a pixel size or file size for online photos, the digital photo matches it.

It does not change your background, fix lighting, or check where your head sits in the frame, your expression, or whether your eyes are open. Passport offices check all of these and reject photos that fail, so follow the linked rules when taking the photo.

Why some countries aren't listed

Some governments don't accept a photo you crop yourself, so a tool like this can't make one for them. As of the date checked:

  • UK passport: Digital photos must be “unaltered by computer software”, and the rules say not to crop the photo yourself: it's cropped for you during the online application. Source: GOV.UK: Photos for passports, checked 30 Oct 2026.
  • Canadian passport: Printed photos for new passports and renewals by mail or in person must be taken by a commercial photographer or photo studio. Source: Government of Canada: Passport photos, checked 30 Oct 2026.
  • French passport and ID card: The photo must be taken by an approved professional or in a photo booth using a system approved by the Ministry of the Interior. Source: Service-Public.fr: photo d'identité, checked 30 Oct 2026.
  • German passport and ID card: Since 1 May 2025 only digital photos are accepted, sent by the photographer through a certified secure system or taken at the authority. Source: City of Wiesbaden: new rules for photographs since 1 May 2025, checked 30 Oct 2026.
  • Australian passport: The passport office doesn't recommend online photo services or apps, and printed photos must be dye-sublimation prints on heavy glossy paper, not inkjet prints. Source: Australian Passport Office: passport photos, checked 30 Oct 2026.

The sizes and these exclusions are also available asJSON, each with its official source and the date it was checked.

Printing the sheet

  • Order a standard 6×4 inch or 10×15 cm photo print, or print at home on photo paper of that size.
  • Print at actual size (100%), with any “fit to page” or borderless cropping turned off.
  • Cut along the grey lines with a craft knife and ruler, or a photo trimmer, for straight edges.

Common uses

  • Printing at a photo kiosk. Pick your country and the 4×6 inch sheet, then print it at any photo kiosk as one standard print. You get several passport photos for the price of one print, ready to cut out.
  • Online visa application. US visa and Indian e-Visa forms want a square digital photo with size limits. Pick the visa and you get the right shape and pixel size, inside the file size limit.
  • Spare photos for forms. Admissions, ID cards and permits often want a passport-size photo stuck to the form. A print sheet gives you several identical copies to keep on hand.

Questions

Will a photo from this tool be accepted?

The tool gets the size and shape right. Acceptance also depends on things it can't check: a plain light background, even lighting, a neutral expression, your head the right size in the frame, and a recent photo. Read the official rules linked for your country before you print or upload.

How do I print passport photos at home or at a shop?

Choose the 4×6 inch print sheet, download it, and print it as a standard 6×4 inch (10×15 cm) photo at a print shop or on photo paper at home, at 100% size with no borders. Then cut along the light grey guides.

How should I take the photo?

Stand in front of a plain white or light grey wall, facing a window or soft light so there are no shadows on your face or behind you. Have someone else take it from about 1.5 metres away at eye level, rather than a selfie, which distorts your features.

Why can't I make a UK or Canadian passport photo here?

Their rules don't allow it. The UK wants photos unaltered by software and not cut down from a larger picture, and Canada wants photos from a commercial photographer. Use a photo booth or studio for those.

What size is a US visa photo?

For the online application it's a square JPEG from 600×600 to 1200×1200 pixels and no more than 240 KB. The US visa option saves exactly 600×600 and keeps the file under the limit.
